29
• Mulching. l~ithin the shrubs only seeding treatments, seedlings
are 2 or 3 times more abundant on the mulched plots than on the
unmulched plots (Table 9).
Rollin the seedbed before and after seeding appears to further
enhance shrub seedling establishment as counts for big sage, service-
berry, and bitterbrush (Table 9) are higher in the rolled and mulched
treatment than any other treatment.
Nitrogen fertilizer did not have a significant impact on shrub
establishment in this study. Shrub counts are not significantly
greater in the shrub-fertilizer treatment than the shrub only treat-
ment; this same trend is also apparent when comparing the treatments
that are mulched with those that were mulched and fertilized. Shrub
counts for each replication are recorded in Appendix Table 7.
- Total vegetative cover for all plots is similar (Table 9);
however, volunteer species make up the bulk of this cover on the
plots without the grass-forb seed mixture. Volunteer species were
also abundant in the treatment where shrubs, grasses, and (orbs
were seeded without any additional management practice. No response
to nitrogen fertilizer by the seeded or volunteer herbaceous species
was apparent. Unsummarized cover data is reported in Appendix
Table 8.
•
•
