SNRUB SEEDING MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
Preparation of the seedbed previous to seeding and post-seeding
management may be extremely important to shrub seedling establishment.
This study represents a complete spectrum of management practices from
just seeding shrubs; to seeding with a mixture of shrubs, grasses, and
forbs; to seeding the mixture, mulching, and fertilizing.
Treatments in this study included mulching with 2 T/A alfalfa
held down with a cotton netting, roiling the soil with a lawn roller
previous to and after shrub seeding, and spring fertilization with

The shrub seed mixture and rates were: serviceberry, 1 lb/A;
snowberry, %, lb/A; bitterbrush, i lb/A; and oak, 1 acorn/20 sq. ft.
The grass and forb seed mixture consisted of slender wheatgrass,
10 lb/A; smooth brome, 10 lb/A; penstemon, 2 lb/A; and Utah sweet-
vetch, 2 lb/A. There are nine plots in each of three replications.
Each plot is labeled with the seed mix that was used and the seeding
management practice on Figure 7.
Each treatment was evaluated on August 10, 1976 for ground cover
and success in establishment of the seeded shrubs.

Com etition. The numbers of shrub seedlings are considerably
greater Table 9) in the treatments that only have shrubs seeded in
them as compared to the treatments with grasses and forbs seeded in
addition to the shrubs.
