5
•
INDIVIDUAL SPECIES SEEDINGS
Environmental tolerances vary not only from species to species,
but also among selections of the same species or even between sources
of seed for the same species. Selecting the Correct species, variety,
or seed source may be critical to the success of a seeding. Thus,
this study was designed to evaluate species, varieties of species, or
the seed source of a particular species with respect to the Colowyo
site. This study also serves as an orientation to identification and
growth habits of the various species for those not familiar with them.
_ Seventy-seven seeding variations are in this study including
seedings of native and introduced species, varieties of the same
species, and different seed sources for the same species. Approximately
20 seeds were sown per foot of row; a definite number of seeds were
used so that survival can be calculated. Four rows 20 feet long
comprised each seeding, all rows are oriented in an east-west manner.
Replication I (Figure 2) is along the south fenceline just west
of the main gate, this replication contains 63 1975 fall seedings and
7 1976 spring seedings. Replication II (Figure 3) is in the south-
west corner of the revegetation test plot and replication III (Figure
4) is in the northwest corner. In addition to the 63 1975 fall
• seedings and 7 1976 spring seedings, replications II and III contain
7 1976 fail seedings.
The 1975 fall seedings were started on October 2 and finished
October 6. Spring 1976 seedings were put in April 28 with the
exception of Sudan grass which was seeded June 12, and fall 1976
seedings were done on October 29. Seedbed preparation for the
individual species seedings consisted of making furrows one-foot
apart with a hoe; the seeds were hand sawn into these furrows. A
very light raking was used to cover tie seed. The individual saecics -
seedings were not mulched and there was some rill erosion from
spring runoff.
The west half of each row in all the seedings for the three
replications was fertilized on April 26 with 60 lb N/A of NH NO_.
Height values for both the fertilized and non-fertilized por~tior~s
of each seeding are in Appendix Tables 2-4. On the more clayey
soils where some subsoil was exposed (Reo I) there was a response
to the N fertilizer treatment, however, in Reps II and III (Appendix
Tables 3 and 4) fertilizer response is minimal.
Observations were made on the individual species seedings through-
out the 1976 growing season, the quantitative evaluation of the
seedings was done on July 8 and 9, 1976. At this time, each seeding
was evaluated for the number of plants that survived and also for
•
