It appears that the reduction Sn seeding rates for introduced
• perennial grasses has enabled a better establishment of the native
species. Total vegetation cover was 35.8 percent, and bare soil
cover was 8.3 percent. Species density was 11.5 species per square
meter which is greater than values for areas seeded prior to 1981.
Total production for areas seeded in 1981 was 266.8 g/m2 (Table
30). Alfalfa accounted for 56.1 percent of the total production.
Introduced perennial grasses accounted for 22.6 percent and native
perennial grasses accounted for 16.2 percent. Of Che native
perennial grasses, slender wheatgrass (Agropyron trachycauZum) had
the highest mean production. Total production was more than twice
the herbaceous production of the native reference areas.
Total shrub density in the 1981 areas was 1140 shrubs per
• hectare (461 shrubs per acre). Mountain snowberry was the major
shrub species followed by big sagebrush. In all, six shrub species
were encountered in the shrub transects (Table 31).
Areas Seeded in 1982. The areas seeded in 1982 (Figure 8) were
seeded with the mix listed in Table 32 and was planted with the
shrubs listed in Table 33. The mix is the same as that used in 1981
except that there is no record of additional fortis being planted. Of
all the herbaceous species included in the mix, only streambank
wheatgrass was not observed on the reclaimed areas. Of the tree and
shrub species that were planted, chokecherry (Prunes virgtiniana),
Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum), and ponderosa pine
(Pines ponderosa) were the only species that were observed. In all,
94 species were observed growing in the areas seeded in 1982 (Table
. 34). This was the highest number of species observed in any of the
71
