were positioned throughout each reclaimed area. The number of
sampling sites within each area was weighted on the basis of the •
areal extent of each parcel. Large parcels triad more samples t:han
smaller parcels. Years in which more total area had been reclaimed
had more samples than years in which less area had been reclaimed.
The sampling intensity was as follows:
Year Number of Samples
1977 10
1978 10
1979 15
1980 2C
1981 3G
1982 2 `~
1983 20 _,
Each of the native vegetation reference areas Baas sampled with ten
individual sampling sites.
Cover Sampling. Cover data were obta:Lned using a quadrat
method. At each sampling location the cover in a 1.0 m2 square
quadrat was visually estimated. Total vegetation cover, cover. by
litter and rock combined, cover by bare soil, cover for individual
species, cover by mosses, and cover by lichens ware estimated in each
quadrat. The data were summarized by computing mean cover, relative
cover (percent of total cover), frequency, relative frequency
(percent of total plots of occurrence), and importance value (sum of
relative cover and relative frequency). Species were ranked within
•
2
