of the total (12.3 g/m2) and introduced perennial grasses accounted
for 70.1 percent of the total (94.9 g/m2). The major introduced •
grasses were smooth brome, intermediate wheatgrass (Agropyron
intermedium), pubescent wheatgrass (Agropyron trichophorwn), and
orchard grass. Perennial fortis other than alfalfa accounted for only
minor amounts of the total production. "'otal production was
greater than that obtained for either of the two reference areas.
Total shrub density was 1460 shrubs per hectare (591 shrubs per
acre) (Table 10). Big sagebrush was the most common shrub and this.
species accounted for approximately 55 percent o1` the total density.
Mountain snowberry accounted for almost all of the: remaining density.
Areas Seeded in 1978. The areas reclaimed in 1978 (Figure 4)
were seeded with the mix shown in Table I1. Native cool season
perennial grasses and introduced perennial grasses were seeded at the
same rates. Shrubs were also planted on the reclaimed areas (Table
12). In total, 53 species were observed on the: areas seeded in 1978
(Table 13). All of the seeded species, except for yellow sweetclover
(Melilotus officinalis), were observed on the 1977 areas. The major
species in the 1978 areas is alfalfa which had a mean cover of 23.1
percent and 90 percent frequency. The aecomi ranking species was
cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer) followed by smooth brome,
intermediate wheatgrass, and orchardgrass. T'hickspike wheatgrass
(Agropyron dasyataehyum) was the highest rs~nlcing native species
(Table 14). Of the species that were seeded, ttie introduced species
have done much better than the native spe:c:ies. The dominant
introduced species accounted for approximately 82 percent of the
total species cover. Total vegetation cover was 58.6 percent and was
30 i
