The material removed from the pit will be hauled to a portable crushing and screening unit by the
frontend-loader as it is removed from the pit. This crushing and screening plant will size the
gravel material and direct it to stockpiles for reloading and hauling off-site. The screening and
crushing plant will be powered by a portable dieseVelectric generating set with a 350 - 500 gallon
fuel tank, positioned nearby. The operator has no plans for an office, but will have a truck trailer
converted to a material shed located neazby the crusher and material removal operation. A
portable sanitation facility ("porta-potti") will be located neaz the supply trailer. A 1500 - 2000
gallon fuel storage tank for fueling equipment and the generator fuel storage tank will be located
in appropriate bermed and plastic lined containment. All of the above equipment is portable and
will be relocated (always kept on disturbed areas) as the mining face advances to reduce loader
cycle times and facilitate reclamation.
Any hazardous materials/petroleum products stored in the storage trailer will be stored in a
containment cabinet designed for the purposed of providing primary containment of spills.
The access road directs all truck traffic to the gravel pit along the southern edge of the permit
boundary and accesses County Road 37.00 approximately 1000' east of the mining boundary.
Overhead power lines cross the mining azea and are illustrated on the Exhibit C-1. San Miguel
Power Association maintains an easement for these structures. The operation will incorporate
measures to insure that the operation will not affect the stability of these structures.
The gravel deposit lies on a shale shelf. This shale layer is considered an impervious confining
layer which should keep the pit floor dry. At least 2-feet of porous material will be left over the
shale layer and under the topsoil to provide for drainage of any intercepted stormwater and for a
rooting zone for establishing vegetation during reclamation. If ground water is encountered, pit
floor projections will be revised to maintain a minimum of 2-feet of undisturbed material above
the ground water.
The only commodities to be mined aze construction materials. Construction materials include bu[
aze not limited to pit run gravel, road base, and screened/sized gravel. No secondary commodities
are to be mined or extracted.
The construction products will be used for the production of asphalt, concrete and road
construction. Additionally, the gravel products aze used as select and special fill for large and
small construction projects.
Operating hours of [he pit aze controlled the Montrose County Special Use Permit.
12/02 D - 2
