•
9. There is no supported indication that pollutants in substantive levels or concentrations
exceeding water quality standards will be released from the proposed Line Camp
operation to either surface or groundwater.
10. There is nothing about the composition of the materials to be mined that would lead
one to suspect that injurious levels of pollutants will be generated or released.
11. There is nothing notable about the mechanical means of mining proposed that would
produce pollutant levels of concern.
12. The listed chemical of concern represent a geologically unusual, perhaps
unprecedented, suite of elements uncharacteristic of the local rocks and mineral
deposit that are proposed for mining and that are present in the Dolores river valley.
That notwithstanding, there are no evident segregating or concentrating mechanisms
that would elevate any component to adverse levels, other than sediment.
13. Sediment discharges would be regulated by other agencies.
14. The notion that radon in air concentrations will increase as a result of mining is
without merit.
15. Mercury is not considered indigenous to the proposed alluvial deposit. A mechanism
for concentrating mercury in the local alluvium is not know. Without mercury
present, there is thus no mechanism for increasing river concentrations through
discharges from the proposed operation.
16. Without the presence of acid or toxic-forming substances on site, there is not
justification for designating this operation.
REFERENCES
Carpenter, Alden B., 1978, Origin and Chemical Evolution of Brines in Sedimentary
Basins, Okla.
