<br />6 <br />~' ~ <br />On the average, 63 percent of an annual precipitation of 17 inches <br />occurs during the five months of April through August. The hottest <br />month is July. with a mean average temperature of 66°F. January, with <br />a mean average temperature of 29°F. is the coldest. During the 20 <br />years of record, snow has fallen in all months except July, August <br />and September. An average total snowfall of 13 inches occurs during <br />each month of February{ March and April. Average total snow for the <br />winter is 66 inches. <br />I <br />These climatological data for the Allen and Maxwell Mine areas <br />indicate an environment of relatively low stress for wildlife. On <br />rare occasions a dept h: of 18 inches or more of snow may be reached, <br />usually for a brief period. While this, and cold weather, represents . <br />increased stress for such game populations as elk (Cervus eZaphusl, <br />mule deer (Odocoileus hemionusJ and wild turkey (1~eZeagris gaZLopavol, <br />occasions of high hazards are rare. The Purgatoire River and associated <br />small ponds will generally be frozen and unavailable for waterfowl from <br />about November 15 to the end of March. <br />Watershed Characteristics <br />The North Fork of the Purgatoire originates above timberline at an <br />elevation of more than 12,000 feet on the east flank of Trinchera Peak. <br />The many creeks that feed the South Fork head along the Sangre de Cristos <br />from Purgatoire Peak north to Culebra Peak.
