COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF PUB~,~ HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT, Water Quuary Control Dirisioa
Rationale -Page 9, Permit No. CO-0036684
2. Waste Minitnizatiot:/Pollution Prevention
Waste minimization and pollution prevention are nvo terms that are becoming increasingly more commo» in indusrn
today. Waste minimization includes reducing the amount of waste at the source through changes itt irtdtrsrrial processes,
and reuse attd recycling of wastes for the original or some other purpose such as materials recovery or energy
production. Pollution prevention goes hand-in-!rand with waste minitnization. /j the waste is eliminated at the jro»t of
the litre, it will trot have to be treated at the end of the line. The direct benefits to the industry are often significa»t -
6oth in terms of increased profit and in public relations.
This program can affect all areas of process and waste control with which votrr industry deals. Elirrrirtattotr or redaction
of a wastewater pollutant can also result in a reduction of an air pollutant or a reducriott itt the anroutrt of Itazardorrs
materials that you have to handle and/or dispose.
This discharge permit does not specifically dictate waste minimization conditions at this tithe. We strongh errcorrrage rlre
perrrtittee [o develop a waste minimization plan. Several industries have already developed plans and farad that
itnplernentatiar resulted in substantial savings. Both the Colorado Depanment of Public Health mtd Environment and
EPA have infonnatiort and resources available to help you explore tIris topic.
F.
