Pit-North of Douglas Pass is located north of Douglas Pass,
29 miles south of the Town of Rangely on State Highway 139.
The pit is a deposit of burnt shale and is an open pit operation. The
' excavation is in the side of a hill and some quarrying has been done in
order to mine the material.
The pit has been usedl for many years by both Rio Blanco County and the
Colorado Department of Highway for highway construction and maintenance
in the area.
'
No large construction project are scheduled in the area in the foreseeable
future, so the pit will be mostly for maintenance work in the area. The
mining operation will leave terraces of varying widths and heights. They
will be contoured to blend with the surrounding terraces; all soil over-
burden will be saved and spread over the disturbed areas. Backslopes will
' be left no steeper than 1:1 and the disturbed areas will be seeded and mulched
as recommended by the Soil Conservation Service.

1
