Class VIII. Soils and landforms in Class VIII cannot be expected to return significant
• on-site benefits from management for crops, grasses, or trees, although benefits from
wildlife use, watershed protection, or recreation may be possible.
Limitations that cannot be corrected may result from the effects of one or more
of the following: (I) Erosion or erosion hazard, (2) severe climate, (3) wet soil, (4)
stones, (5) low moisture capacity, and (6) salinity or sodium.
e -- Erosion by wind or water is the dominant hazard or limitation of this soils use.
w -- These soils have excess water from poor soil drainage, wetness, high water
table, or overflow.
s -- Soil limitations within the rooting zone, including such limitations as
shallowness of rooting zones, stones, low moisture-holding capacity, low fertility too
difficult to correct, and salinity or sodium excess.
c -- These soils have a climatic (temperature or lack of moisture) limitation as the
• only major hazard or limitation in their use.
The majority of the soils in the Edna mine plan area are classified as Vle or Vlle.
These two classes are similar except that Class VII soils will not respond to added
amendments because of Their physical conditions, while Class VI soils will respond to
amendments. All of the soils in the area are suited for rangeland, woodland, or
wildlife habitat.
2.9.3.2 Land Productivity
The productivity of the land in the mining areas is limited in agricultural
productivity to use as a summer range for cattle and sheep. During the summer
months, twelve acres of dry rangeland in the area can support one cow unit or five
sheep units. The Moffat area has been used as summer range for cattle but is now
mainly used by sheep. West Ridge has not been used for any known agricultural
activities. The land management in either area has been limited to grazing and
pasture rotations of livestock. It has not included seeding, brush control, adding
. amendments or other such upkeep of the land. The vegetation section, 2.4, contains
information about the diversity and productivity of the existing vegetation. The
production data known for the irrigated land along Trout Creek is given on the
following page.
Revised 8-81 2.9-16
