Doc Date:12111l2001 II I I II I III II IIII III
sss
2.9 LAND USE
2.9.1 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The regional land use surrounding the Edna Mine ranges from coal mining to
irrigated hay and wheat production. The principal land use is rangelend without
management controls other than rotational grazing of sheep and cattle. There are
irrigated and subirrigated hay and wheat fields adjacent to Trout Creel< and near the
Edna Mine permit area. Within the mine area, there is rangeland and clusters of
forest land. The Moffat area is rangeland used for summer grazing by sheep. The
climatic and topographic conditions of the region are restrictive to the effect that
the remainder of The mine area is not utilized for agricultural purposes and is
rangeland and forest land.
2.9.2 OBSERVATIONS
2.9.2.1 Regional Land Use
• A Land Use and Land Cover map of Craig; Colorado; Wyoming was published in
1979 by the U.S.G.S. from information compiled in 1975 to 1977. From this map,
the area around the Edna Mine was enlarged from a 1:250,000 scale to a 1:24,000
scale and was then overlayed on the topography map for the area (see Exhibit 2.9-I).
This Exhibit 2.9-I shows, on a Level II order, i~he major land use and land cover for
the area as mixed rangeland and forests. The fpllowing definitions provide a general
understanding of what is included in each category at Levels I and II. Level I is
represented by one digit numbers (i.e., I is Urban Land) and Level II is represented
by two digit numbers, (i.e., II is Residential). This is not the complete classification
and ii defines only the units found on Exhibit 2.°O-I. All of these definitions ore
taken from the U.S.G.S. Professional Paper 1964, A Land Use and Land Cover
Classification System for Use with Remote Sensor Data. The minimum mapping
units for the Level II order are: 10 acres for~Categories II-13, 24 and 75, and 40
acres for all other Level II categories.
I. URBAN OR BUNT-UP LAND
• Urban or Built-up Land is comprised of areps of intensive vse with much of the
land covered by structures. Included in this category ore cities, towns, villages, strip
2.9-I
