1
' ShD--Shingle loam, 3 to 20 percent elopes. This shallow, well
' drained soil is on plains and foot slopes. It formed in residuun derived
dominantly from interbedded sandstone and shale. The native vegetation is
mainly grasses. Elevation is 5,100 to 5,600 feet. The average annual
precipitation is 11 to 13 inches, the average annual air te~erature is 51
' to 53 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 140 to 170 days.
Typically, the surface layer is light gray loam about 6 inches thick.
The substratim is clay loam about 7 inches thick over weathered shale at a
depth of 13 inches. The soil is moderately alkaline. The soils in a few
areas have a high content of gypsim crystals. About 20 percent of the
t surface is covered by small sandstone channery fragments in some areas. A
few areas have a gravelly loam surface layer.
' Included in this unit is about 5 percent Midway clay loam on uplands.
' The Midway soil is more clayey than this Shingle soil. Also included is
about 5 percent moderately deep Minnequa silt loam on concave positions and
' foot slopes. Also included are small areas of shale outcrop on steeper
breaks.
' Permeability of this Shingle soil is moderate. Available water
' capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 4 to 20 inches. fhmoff is
slow to very rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is slight to very high.
' This unit is used for rangeland.

:~
