3.16
Shrubs to be planted will include Utah Serviceberry (Arne/anchierutahensis), Big
Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), Fourwing Saltbush (Atrip/ex canescens), Shadscale Saltbush
(Abip/ex confer6folia), Winterfat (Ce2toides /antana), True Mountain Mahogany (Cerocarpus
montanus), Rubber Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus), Gambel's Oak (Quercusgambe/ih,
Prostrate Summer Cypress (lfochia prosbata), and Skunkbush (Rhus tnlobata).
These shrubs will also be direct seeded and will be contained in the seed mixture.
Separate seed mixtures may be required to meet the specific planting requirements for the
various species.
Disturbances in the Shadscale and greasewood shrubland include the road, office complex
and the sediment pond area. The planting density will be about 70 seeds per square foot for
drill seeding and about 100 seeds per square foot for broadcast seeding.
• In consultation with the agencies involved in the revegetation at the McClave Canyon
Mine, Grand Valley proposes to eliminate Greasewood from its revegetation seed mix. The
elimination of greasewood will enhance the value of the land for its post mining use, rangeland
and wildlife habitat. The return of the current dense shrub cover may in fact be detrimental.
3.4.8 Protection of Newly Seeded and Planted Areas
To protect planted areas from damage by domestic livestock a three wire barbed wire
fence will be constructed across the mouth of the canyon and extend to East Salt Creek. The
fence will consist of 330 feet new fence along with rehabilitation of the existing fences to the
North and South. This fence will remain in place for three years or until the vegetation can
• support grazing and/or browsing.
IVIo Volume 1 4.29-96
