313
3.4 REVEGETATION
3.4.1 SEEDBED PREPARATION
Prior to seeding, the topsoiled surfaces will be ripped if they have become compacted by
vehicle or equipment traffic. If broadcast seeding is to be employed, the surface will be left
somewhat rough. ff drill seeding is planned, the surface will be worked as necessary with disc,
plow, harrow, and or cultipacker to achieve a smooth, firm seedbed.
3.4.2 SEED MIXTURE
The revegetation seed mixtures are listed in Table 3.4-1. The mixes are designed for
each specific vegetation type that occurs in the disturbed area. Each mix takes into account the
type of vegetation desired, soil conditions and the orientation of the area to be reclaimed.
Three vegetation types are to be disturbed by the mining activities. They include juniper
woodland, greasewood shrubland, and shadscale shrubland. The reclamation seed mixes
developed are specific to each vegetation type. In some areas, seed size may dictate that a
further breakdown of the mix be made to accommodate the various planting requirements for
the seed types. The species prevailing in each site will be representative of the predisturbance
vegetation types.
3.4.3 SEEDING TECHNIQUES AND RATES
Seed will be planted using either broadcast or a seed drill. If broadcast, the seed mix will
be spread at the rate that will deposit approximately 100 seeds per square foot of the mix to be
used. A discussion of seeding rates for areas containing shrubs and trees is contained in
Section 3.4.7. Following broadcasting, a chain drag or similar implement will be used to
` ~ improve seed cover.
M~ Volume 1 429-96
