The most prominent structure on the property is a large, three-story, stone barn
that originally contained awind-powered mill. The stone quarried to construct
this barn originated from Stout, Colorado, which is now at the bottom of
Horsetooth Reservoir. Some of the original equipment is still housed in the barn.
The barn itself is in excellent condition considering that it is 128 years old. The
barn and other historic structures will not be affected by the proposed sand and
gravel mine. The historic barn and related agricultural structures on the property
are not on the National or State Register of Historic Places, but the landowners
definitely want to preserve these structures (especially the barn) in perpetuity.
The proposed sand and gravel mining operation will not directly or indirectly
impact the historic structures. Mining, processing and hauling are not anticipated
to damage the structures whatsoever, as these structures are very solid, stone
and masonry buildings. The property owner is pursuing mechanisms to
document, restore and preserve the barn and related structures.
Significant historical or archaeological sites that are encountered during mining
shall be studied and preserved and/or recorded, if deemed warranted by
Colorado Historical Society, Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.
a~
