~}. cv-~~~- ob~e~,~~.
Hans R. Croeber
62201 North Star Drive
Montrose, CO 81401
16 July 2003
Division of Mining and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 8u2o3
Dear Sir of Madam,
RECEIVED
t/JUL 2 1 2003
Division ~f Minerals and GealoBY
This letter is concerning the proposed mine known as the Halderson Sand and Gravel mine
in Montrose, Colorado, File No. M-200-037.
There seems to be many environmental issues that have not been completely investigated.
The water issues aze of particular interest to me. A large amount of water will be required
to process all of that gravel and to run the 2 bulk plants. Where will this water come from
as my understanding is that all of the water in the Uncompaagre project must stay with the
land? Also, where will all of this contaminated water go after it has been used by
Halderson. It seems likely that it would contaminate the many springs, and possibly the
Uncompahgre River itself. Halderson must show evidence that this operation will not
affect the quality of the ground water and river in this area.
This area is agricultural and residential. A deep hole would be an unacceptable end to the
mining. This area should be reclaimed as crop land to level at least 2 feet above the water
table.
Halderson should be required to have a completed hydrological survey done with
assurances that any damage caused by them to the ground water should be their financial
responsibility.
There aze a number of other issues like dust, noise, smell, traffic, etc. that beaz negatively
on this mine being located in this area. However, the water issue remains critical and
Halderson must be held accountable for the quality of our ground water before the mine
goes into operation.
Sincerely,
~~~~
