su"•'°°• "° so. ~""'°° etia. Northern
~~`=~. P. O. Bm 17Fi63. T.min.l Ame: Coal
o.~..r, caor.ao sozv
~' T.kororc 3oaasa.aeoo Company
January 6, 1981
Mr. Jim Herron
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
723 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Rienau No. 2 Mine - Crossing Under Curtis Creek
Dear Mr. Herron:
On Wednesday, December 31, 1980, Terry Schulz and I met with you,
Mr. Pendleton and Mr. Cox concerning the protective measures and
monitoring that Northern will engage in while crossing under
Curtis Creek. As a result of that meeting, we came away with an
understanding about certain issues which will be addressed in
addition to those mentioned in our December 11, 1980 letter.
Those points are as follows:
1. Additional subsidence monitoring points. As you pointed
out, it would be helpful in the event of subsidence to have points
in addition to those directly ovei the main entries. In order to
accomplish this, we will place six more monitoring points as
located on the attached map. These points are within the area of
influence and should reflect any change in elevation. Each co-
ordinate and elevation will be forwarded as soon as survey work is
finished.
2. Quarterly monitoring of subsidence points. We will monitor
the subsidence points quarterly and forward the elevation information
to you for your review. We would propose that this monitoring con-
tinue for one year on a quarterly basis and yearly after that.
3. Minimum of 2 weeks surface flow data on Curtis Creek. As
was suggested at the meeting, we will have a minimum of 2 weeks
surface flow data on Curtis Creek prior to mining under the creek.
Also the flumes which have been installed will be equipped with the
WATEC design de-icer so as to allov a free flow for measurement pur-
poses. The flumes will also be checked regularly for ice build-up.
4. Copies of drum charts and reduced data. We will forward'to
you for your review a copy of the drum charts as well as reduced data
on the Curtis Creek flow.
5. Surface owners' agreemeat. As we related to you on December
~~r 11th, we are still pursuing an agreement with the surface owner so that
we may have access to monitor the ground water wells in the vicinity.
We vill keep you advised of any developments along this line.
