State Req.
• conerning Stipulation No. 8 to the Seneca Mine Permit C-005-80, it was
decided that Seneca would monitor the movement of total dissolved solids
(TDS) from the spoils to the Grassy Creek alluvium. Monitoring would take
place in the following manner: ground water wells GW-531 and GW-S33 will
be monitored on a weekly basis for water level, pH, temperature, and spe-
cific conductivity. A complete water quality check will be taken on a
bi-annual basis. Stream water monitoring will continue monthly on Grassy
Creek at Stations SW-S2-I and SW-S2-2. As a result of the collapse of
GW-531 in the winter of 1982, Well GW-31A2 was drilled in the fall of 1982
to replace this well. In the 1982 "Seneca 11 Mine Annual Hydrology Report,"
Seneca requested changing the frequency of collection of field parameters
for the two alluvial wells from a weekly to a monthly bosis. The request was
granted by the CMLR staff and as a result monthly monitoring began in
January 1983 and continues.
Peabody will replace monitoring wells destroyed during the course of mining
with wells completed in spoil materials and will monitor these wells for
• water levels and water quality. All monitoring wells will be properly main-
tained by qualified personnel.
Following reclamation bond release, all monitoring wells will be abandoned
by filling the well casing with a high quality sodium bentonite hole plugging
agent to within seven feet of the ground surface. The hole plug will be
topped by five feet of cement and the casing will be broken off at two feet
below the ground surface. The last two feet of hole will be filled with
topsoi I.
Ground water data collected at the Seneca Il Mine are on file at the Seneca
II Mine office and are reported to the CMLR in annual reports. Annual
reports submitted to date are on file at the mine office.
4.05.13(2) Surface Water
Surface water data are collected at monitoring sites SW-S2-I, SW-S2-2,
• SW-S2-5, SW-S2-6, NPDES 002, NPDES 003, and NPDES 004, the locations of
7-10-22 Revised September 28, 1'84
which are illustrated on Exhibit 7-2. Another site, SW-52-4 was monitored
until April of 1984 when the CMLR staff approved elimination of this site
