• 2.1.4 Seasonal Temperatures and Humidity
The mean annual temperature for the Craig, Colorado vicinity is 42.3°F
C5.7°C). This mean value is calculated from the Kational Weather Service
(NWS) temperature data collected in the Craig vicinity for the forty-four (44)
year period between 1936 and 1979 (Table 2.1-l2 ). The highest maximum temper-
ature for the area reached 100°F (37.8°C) in June of 1936 (Table 2.1-13) but
has never been duplicated since. The lowest minimum temperature dropped to
minus 45°F (-42.8°C) in January of 1963 (Table 2.1-14 ). Temperatures between
minus 30°(F) and minus 40°(F) are not uncommon each winter. The maximum mean
monthly temperature of 66.8°F (19.3°C) and the minimum mean monthly tempera-
ture of 17.05°F (-8.3°C) occur in July and January respectively. There is an
average of 14 days in the year when the maximum temperature reaches 90°F
(32.1°C) or higher, and 41 days with maximums 32°F (0°C) and below. For the
minimums, 221 days are 32°F (0°C) or colder, of which 39 are 0°F (-17.7°C) or
colder (Berry, 1966).
. Figure 2.1-15 shows the normal diurnal temperature cycle for Craig by plotting
the ambient air temperature against the hour of the day. The minimum tempera-
ture usually occurs just before dawn (5:00-7:OOam MST) and the maximum is
reached in the afternoon (2:00-S:OOpm MST).
Figure 2.1-16 presents the ambient air temperature for each month of the year
and depicts the normal annual temperature cycle. These figures are based on
data collected during 1971 and 1972 (Stearns-Roger, 1973).
•
2-42
