The noise and human activities associated with the mining operation will no doubt move the deer
away from the area during operation. However, that does not preclude them from returning to the area
once the operation has been shut down in the evenings. The noise will have a much greater impact on
the deer herds if the mining continues into the winter months.
At the present time, I am unaware of any state or federally listed threatened or endangered
species being on the property.
Overall, the mining operation should have limited short-term effects on the wildlife species that
use the area. This is of course assuming that the sRe will be adequately reclaimed and that the lands
use remains agricultural. 1 am somewhat concerned about the proliferation of gravel pit operations along
this portion of the Naturita Canyon rim. At the present time, there are three active mining projects within
a half square mile area. The cumulative effect of these operations is difficuR to determine, but needs to
be watched carefully.
