•
,
Upon the completion of the county road relocation, topsoil
removal will begin in the pit area of Unit 1. (See maps f:3
and 114.) After the topsoil has been removed and stocl:piled,
overburden stripping will follow. The entire overburden
material in this pit will be stockpiled in two locations fot
future backfilling. The locations of these stocl:niles nr~
shown in map 113.
Due to the dip of the coal seam, the coal will be removed in
conjunction with the overburden removal: As the final tons
of coal are removed from Unit 1, topsoil removn].cai.ll bc,^,in i~t
Unit 2. The .overburden spoil removed from tlic upper poc~tioii
of the pit will be used to fill the lower portion of the pit in
Unit 1. The remaining area of the pit will be baclcfillcd u~in
the overburden stockpiled from Unit 1 stripping. The overburden
material in the lower portion of the pit in Unit 2 will bc• stock-
. piled in the areas designated in map .113. After Unit 1 bael:fi]Li~i~
is completed, it will then be topsoiled and prepared for spring
• or fall seeding.
The coal in Unit 2 will be removed in cogjunction with the
overburden removal. As the final tons of coal are removaa•
from Unit 2, topsoil removal from a portion of Unit 3 will
begin. The topsoil will be stockpiled for future retopsoiling
in the pit area of Unit 3. (See map 113.)
•
The open pit area of Unit 2 will be backfilled from the stock-
piled overburden material. Upon completion of backfilling,
retopsoiling will be done with preparation for seeding in the
spring or fall season.
Unit 3 will be mined in portions and in sequence (see map 1'3)
with topsoil removed and stockpiled until a portion of the pit
is completely backfilled. Overburden ,removal and stockpiling
will continue until a mined out portion of the pit is available
for backfilling. The remaining overburden yardage then will be
back-hauled for immediate backfilling. Coal will be removed in
conjunction with the overburden removal. ~,
_ Mining will 'proceed north until the final pit is completed. U~~on
removal of the final coal tonnage, backfilling of•the final pit
will begin using overburden from the existing stockpiles Jocatcd
nearby. At the completion.of backfilling, final topsoiling anal
seeding will continence.
The above mining will take approximately 8 years and produce
approximately 609,000 Eons of coal per year f.or a total of
approximately 4,950,500 tons for the life of mine.
t
•6
..: ~: ~ .:
There are two operating strip mines within the vi.cin~iCy of Lhc
proposed lease tract. 1Jyoming fuel's Sigma Miuc is located one
and a half mile south of the tract and Pen 's present mini.nf;
operation adjoins the tract at the soLitli bounclnry.
5
