The
soils on this site are generally divided into two primary
groups. First, there are the upland soils of the terraces and
semi-plateaus. Second, are those of the slope areas of the
more eroded and hilly portions of the site. Soils found at the
site include:
1. Satanta Series - Combined with the Buick Series, these
soils form the best topsoil sources and also consitute
about 50 to 60 percent of the site area. This series
is generally found in the most level portions on the
upland areas. It is a soft, loamy soil that could be
salvaged to 12 or more inches (generally not more than
18" though). A variant exists on slopes and shows a
relationship to the Newlin Series in that this Satanta
variety has a sparsely gravelled surface that extends
not more than a few inches into the ground. But below
that zone it is generally as loamy as the standard
Satanta soils. There is no hazard in treating this
variant in the same manner as the less gravelly upland
Satanta soil.
- 25 -
