• ~ An isolated find (a flake and a hammerstone) was located at
the edge of an arroyo near the edge of the tr'bck turn-around area
above the proposed dumping area.
No additional cultural resources were located during the
present survey. Vegetation was very dense in the areas of the
new access road and truck turn-around (hay field) on the mesa top
so that visibility was generally only fair to poor. This area is
in close proximity to the recorded archaeological site and
isolated find (both are on the truck turn-around perimeter).
Visibility on the valley floor (conveyor belt area), was generally
unrestricted, as much of the area has been overgrazed in the recent
past. Inspection of the construction area north of the river also
failed to reveal cultural materials,
RECOMMENDATIONS
The site contained few surficial artifactual materials, no
features or evidence of fire use and no apparent subsurface
deposits. Further, the potential for subsurface deposits is
small, as the soil is less then 20 cm in places. Therefore, the
site is unlikely to yield information important to the culture
history of the area and does not appear to be eligible to the
National Register of Historic Places.
• . The isolated artifact is non-diagnostic, does not appear to
be associated with other cultural materials and therefore, is not
significant.
we recommend that the project be allowed to proceed with the
following conditions:
(1) that the remainder of the new access road be fla ged and
surveyed for cultural resources; an
(2) that, because of material potential for buried resources
and proximity to known cultural resources, monitoring
during construction activities, or a oroaram agree to
initiated in those areas of poor surface
