4-52
4.5.2.4 Plant Species List
• A total of 95 species of vascular plants was identified in the
study area during the 1980 and 1981 growing seasons. These
95 species encompass 27 families and 79 genera. Lifeforms
are represented as follows: 3 trees, 19 shrubs and subshrubs,
4 succulents, 16 perennial graminoids, 1 annual graminoid,
31 perennial fortis, and 21 annual fortis. The flora of the
site is characterized by the presence of numerous annual weedy
fortis, introduced annual grasses, a diversity of native deci-
duous shrubs, and perennial, native, cool season mid-grasses
with a bunch grass growth form. See Table 4.5-225.
Twenty-one plant species, or 22 percent of the total identified,
are introduced from outside of the region. This percentage
is made up of weedy fortis and three grasses. Two species,
field bindweed Convolvulus arvensis and whitetop Cardaria
drabs, are listed by Thornton et al. (1974) as being prohibited
noxious weeds (especially difficult to control). Field penny-
. cress Thlaspi arvense is cited by Thornton as being a restricted
noxious weed, very objectionable but controllable.
Of species officially listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service (USFWS 1980) as threatened or endangered, only one,
the hookless Uinta basin cactus Pediocactvs glaucus (also
known as Sclerocactus glaucus), has a known distribution close
to the project area. This cactus was not observed within any
of the vegetation types in the permit revision area. There
are two species, Wetherill milkvetch astragalus wetherillii
and cliffdwellers candlestick Cryptantha elata, currently
under review for threatened and endangered status (USFWS 1980)
which have a potential occurrence in the project area, consi-
dering their ecological requirements. However, the ecological
inventory did not verify these species to be present. Like-
wise, none of the species listed by the Colorado Natural Heritage
Inventory (1980) as "plant species of special concern" have been
• observed in the study area.
