4-49
Shrubs form approximately 50 percent of the vegetation cover,
• while annual grasses and forbs contribute most of the remaining
cover. See Table 4.5-16S. Gardner saltbush is the dominant
shrub. Other shrubs sparsely present include shadscale saltbush,
horsebush, low rabbitbrush, and broom snakeweed. Cheatgrass
and blue mustard Chorispora tenella, an introduced annual weed,
-provide most of the herbaceous cover and production. Other
herbaceous plants present in the community include Gordon
eriogonum sriogonum gordonii, Salina wildrye, and hoary aster
Machaeranthera canescens.
Shrub densities averaged 13 individuals/25 m2or 2,105 individuals/
ac. Gardner saltbush accounts for 72 percent of all shrubs
in the density transects. Other shrubs present include those
listed above as occurring in the cover transects. See Table
4.5-17S.
Shrub heights were low, ranging from 18.0 cm for broom snakeweed
• to 30.4 cm for shadscale saltbush. Gardner saltbush, the dominant
plant, had an average height of 19.0 cm. See Table 4.5-17S.
4.5.2.2.5 Juniper Woodland
The Juniper Woodland vegetation type occurs predominantly
on an upland terrace in the area of the proposed refuse disposal
area. The major soil types occurring on this terrace are the
Torriorthents-rock outcrop complex, a shallow to deep alluvial
soil derived from sandstone, and the Torriorthents-Uffens
complex, a deep, well-drained loamy soil. Small patches of
Juniper Woodland also occur along the haul road and coal conveyor
corridor where it intercepts west-facing slopes of steep ridges.
Total vegetation cover in the Juniper Woodland averages 37.3
percent. Litter, soil, and rock cover are all relatively high
at 24.2, 22.6, and 15.9 percent, respectively. Cover by life
form is as follows: trees, 29.8 percent; shrubs, 2.1 percent;
• perennial grasses, 0.2 percent; annual grasses, 3.1 percent;
