4-46
Succulents did not occur in the cover transects; however,
• hedgehog cactus echinocereus triglochidiatus and plains prickly-
pear are conspicuously present within the type.
Production
Total estimated production of clipped plots averaged 51.4
g/2 m2 (229 lbs/ac) and ranged from 13.2 g/2 m2 to 140.3 g/2 m2.
Total graminoid production (including annuals) is 44.7 g/2 m2
which is largely made up of cheatgrass brome (35.3 g/2 m2).
Minor graminoid producers are the same as the minor cover species
and consist of native, perennial grasses including galleta and
Indian ricegrass. Total forb production is 6.7 g/2 m2 and
consists mostly of annual species. See Table 4.5-lOS.
Shrub Density and Height
Shrub density within the vegetation type averages 30 individuals/
25 m2 or 4,777 individuals/ac. Shadscale saltbush (1,901 individ-
uals/ac} and broom snakeweed (1,758 individuals/ac) together
• account for 77 percent of the shrubs. Other common shrubs
include horsebrush, Gardner saltbush, greasewood, winterfat,
and low rabbitbrush. See Tables 4.5-115 and 4.5-265.
Mean shrub heights ranged from a low of 13.2 cm for Gardner
saltbush to a high of 88.3 cm for the infrequently occurring
greasewood. Shadscale saltbush, the dominant shrub, averaged
37.9 cm in height while slightly less dominant broom snakeweed
averaged 28.3 cm in height. See Table 4.5-255.
4.5.2.2.3 Shadscale Wildrye Grassland
The Shadscale Wildrye Grassland vegetation type occurs on
relatively steep, north-facing slopes. The major soil type
is the Chipeta silty clay loam, a shallow, well-drained soil.
This community is characterized by native bunchgrasses with
a sparse overstory of shrubs and trees.
•
