4-49
• Mean shrub heights ranged from a low of 35.0 cm for broom
snakeweek to a high of 120.6 for greasewood. Big sagebrush,
the major shrub, had an average height of 94.0 cm. Other
shrub heights are recorded in Table 4.5-265.
_Reference Area
The Greasewood Shrubland reference area is located in Section
21, T7S, R102W along Colorado Highway 139 approximately 1 mile
north of the Munger Canyon permit area. The reference area is
irregular in shape and incorporates approximately 7 acres.
See Figure 4.5-15. This reference area was sampled in 1980
at the same time the affected area was sampled.
Greasewood Shrubland reference is representative of the
area with respect to cover, but much higher in production.
Total cover in the affected area is 63.2 contrasted with 67.7
in the reference. Production for the affected area is 522
• pounds per acre contrasted to 1,216 for the reference. Grease-
wood is the dominant shrub as in the affected area although
big sagebrush is also prevalent in the affected area. The
reference area is apparently not as disturbed and overgrazed
as the affected area as suggested by the increased abundance
of western wheatgrass here. This perennial, native, sod-forming
cool season grass is also the dominant producer in the reference
area (110.8 2
g/m ) and accounts for the higher production in the
reference area. See Tables 4.5-35 and 4.5-65 for cover data
and Tables 4.5-45 and 4.5-7S for production data.
Shrub densities are somewhat variable between reference (3,483
per acre) compared to affected (3,067 per acre) areas. This is
due to the better range conditions of the reference area. See
Tables 4.5-SS and 9.5-85.
4.5.2.2.2 Shadscale Cheatgrass Shrubland
• The Shadscale Cheatgrass vegetation type is present only in the
area of the refuse disposal on the level terrain of the small
