4-26
4.4 SOILS ASSESSMENT
• 4.4.1 Methodology
This soil assessment was conducted by Western Resource Development
Corporation and their subcontractor, James P. Walsh and Associates,
Inc., for Salt Creek Mining Company's proposed permit revision
to Munger Mine Permit, No. C-020-81. The mine is located in Gar-
field County, Colorado. The survey was conducted to assist Salt
Creek in obtaining necessary environmental permits and assisting
in the design, construction and reclamation phases of the project.
The soil assessment consisted of four phases:
° Field mapping
° Site-specific soil description and sampling
° Laboratory soil analyses
° Interpretation and reporting
Field mapping was conducted during several visits made summer of
• 1980 through early 1982. The mapping was based on the manuscript
Soil Conservation Service (SCS) soil survey for Garfield County
(unpublished). Mapping was done on topographic maps at scales
of 1" = 200' to 1" = 500', and aerial photography with stereo
coverage. Map units were designed specifically for the site.
The SCS mapping was refined considerably and mapping within the
permit area approximates an Order I or very detailed Order II
survey (Figure 4.4-1S).
A site-specific soil description and sampling program was conducted
over the same two year period. Twenty-one backhoe pits were exca-
vated in or adjacent to the proposed permit area. Soil pedons in
the addendum area were described in detail according to the stan-
dards of the National Cooperative Soil Survey (USDA Soil Survey
Staff 1951, USDA SCS 1975) and descriptions are included in Appen-
dix Es. Descriptions for pedons at Munger or McClane Canyon Mines
are included in "Soils Assessment - Munger Canyon Mine" (C-020-81),
• and "Soils Assessment - McClane Canyon Mine" (C-009-81), (WRD 1980a;
1980b). At each pedon, soils were sampled by horizon for laboratory
analysis.
