i
•
Reclamation Plan:
The reclamation of the entire area will be delayed until all four phase
areas of gravel removal have been completed. Each phase is expected to
take about three to four years.
At the end of that period the excavation will be left as a large pond,
maintained by the water level of the Gunnison River.
Total depth of the excavation will be approximately eighteen feet. The
water depth is expected to be about eight to ten feet.
During excavation, topsoil and unsuitable material for gravel will be stock-
piled. Later it will be used to spread back onto the slopes +3bove the
high water line. The sides will be back-slopes to 3:1 starting at least
thirty feet from the property line. The upper portion of the slopes will
be seeded to grasses in the fall of the year. An adaptable grass will
be used.
Adaptable Grass Species Seeding Rate
Western wheatgrass - Agropyron smithii 1611 PLS/acre
Streambank wheatgrass - Agropyron riparium lllt PLS/acre
*rate for drilling, must be doubled if broadcast
PLS = ~ germination x p purity
100
Management After Reclamation:
Grasses will become established in two years. At least four F~lants per
square foot are required for an adequate stand. No livestock grazing will
be done on the site during that time.
Fertilizing will be done at the end of the first growing season after
planting or at the beginning of the second growing season, if needed.
Fertilizing in this manner avoids rapid weed growth during grs.ss establish-
ment.
Weed control will be done as required to keep weeds, particul~.rly Russian
knapweed, under control. Spray during periods of rapid plant growth and
good soil moisture conditions in the spring or early summer.
lJ
