•
i•
WATER INFORMATION
1. Surface Water General Discussion
APR ~ 8 LJ06
Division of Minerals and Geology
EXHIBIT G
As dry as the surrounding area is (less than 12" annual precipitation), the East and West Drainages as
shown on Maps C-1 or C-2 aze perennial in nature near the southern portion of flee permit azea..
Above the seep in the West Drainage, the arroyo is dry. In addition, the West Dr~unage leads to a
small wetland located immediately above the point where the West Drainage crosses the access road.
The construction of the access road occurred yeazs ago, and this probably played a part in backing up
the water sufficiently to form the wetland. The small pond associated with the wetland is
approximately 0.02 acres in size but there is an additional area of 0.03 acres upstream from the pond
that qualifies as a wetland due to the vegetation, soil and hydrology. The wetland plants consist of
sedges and wetland grasses. This wetland will not be disturbed by the mining or reclamation
operations.
As is seen from Map C-1, the West Drainage basin ends on a hillside approximately 750 feet north
of the northwest corner of the pernut. Although the drainage azea is small, a perched aquifer outlets
uphill from the mine and supplies the stream. Base flow rates range from 10-40 gallons per minute
and the water quality is typical of the western slope of Colorado with pH in the range of 8.0-8.5, high
hazdness and dissolved solids in the range of 500-1000 ppm.
The East Drainage also has a small drainage azea but is also influenced by seasonal irrigation on the
mesa located northeast of the mine area. It starts as a spring which outlets the sarrle perched aquifer
as the West Drainage. Its quality is similaz to the East Drainage and its flow rates are slightly less, in
the range of 5-35 gpm. The East Drainage will be used to irrigate the flat azeas of the reclaimed azea,
using the water rights of the landowner. Both stream flows were calculated by Greg Lewicki and
were verified for seasonal changes by discussion with the landowner.
Bellgazdt Pit 1/06
31
