• rill be represented by a reference area. Sampling of the area to be mined
l
x111, therefore, be stratified according to the soil survey.
B,4, Density of SandsaRe
B,4,1. Purpose of sampllnK
Because the density of sandsage is a relatively stable attribute, the mean
density by subsite on the area to be mined provides the most appropriate
base for success standard, This corresponds to the regulations at 4,15.7
(2)(d)(iii),
B,4.2. General sampling procedure
We prepared a grid 600 by 600 feet beginning at the SW corner of Section 25,
which lies xithin the area to be mined. This grid extended therefrom into
Sections 25, 26, 35 and 36 to cover the area to be mined. A total of 120
• points were obtained xith 28 points on Osgood Sand and 92 points on Valent
Sand. Of the 28 points on Osgood Sand, xe chose at random 15 points to be
sampled. Of the 92 points on Valent Sand, xe chose ZO points at random
to be sampled. All sampling points rill be located by pacing along compass
lines, Densities rill be reported in number per acre.
B,4,3, Plot size
Preliminary sampling indicates sandsage density in the general range of
1,000 to 3,000 per acre. To obtain counts large enough to pexait the uae
of normal-theory statistics on uncoded date, we propose a plot size of
1100 th acre (5 by 87 feet).
B.4,4. Sample size
Fifteen to 20 plots on each subsite should be sufficient. If additional
plots are needed, the random selection of grid points rill be expanded.
•
C
3
