11 <br />• SOIL MAPPING UNIT P7O. 2 <br />This unit is very limited in extent, it shows the loca- <br />tion of soils where shale was encountered within a 60-inch <br />depth. Both the subsoil and underlying shale material <br />could be utilized for stabilizing roads. <br />From a revegetation and stabilization point of view, <br />the top 12 inches from this unit would be suitable topsoil <br />material. <br />SOIL MAPPING UNITS N0. 3 & 4 <br />These units reflects the extent and location of soils <br />which have approximately 9 to 6 inches of surface soil <br />that if salvaged would be more suitable as topsoil material <br />than any of the materials below this depth. <br />The soil layer (AC horizons of the Valent soil as des- <br />cribed in this report) that underlies the surface layer <br />varies in thickness from 8 to 12 inches and is slightly <br />• higher in organic matter and in fertility than the materials <br />below. However, this layer is more like the underlying ma- <br />terial than the surface layer. The potential benefit of <br />salvaging this material separately to use as subsurface soil <br />is questionable. And since it is more like the underlying <br />materials (C horizons) it is not recommended that it be <br />mixed with the A horizon materials. <br />SOIL MAPPING UNIT NO. 5 <br />This unit reflects the extent and location of soils <br />which have the thinnest and least uniform occurrence of <br />topsoil material. These areas reflect recent wind erosion <br />activities. The topography is described as being "choppy" <br />and a number of "blow-out" areas occur. These areas will <br />become very susceptible to wind erosion if and when they <br />are disturbed. In some areas the surface layer is very <br />similar in physical and chemical characteristics to the <br />substratum (C horizon) materials of the Valent soils. If <br />volume of available topsoil calculations are made for this <br />unit, it is recommended that the volume be reduced by 50 <br />percent, if the calculations are based on the thickness <br />. of the surface horizon of the typical Valent soil as des- <br />cribed in this report. <br />
