Box 1600
Castle Rock, Colorado 80104-6100
RE: Bijou Clay Pit Permit Application;
Application Adequacy Review
Dear Mr. Spence:
~~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
lames S. Lochhcad
E..cruove Director
Michael B. Lung
Division Director
Permit No. M-97-007;
The Division has Completed its preliminary adequacy review of the
Denver Brick Company's application for a 112 mining permit known as
the Bijou Clay Pit. In general, the application is well organized
and addresses the required information in sufficient detail. There
are a few areas where some additional information will be required
as follows.
EXHIBIT I - SOILS INFORMATION
According to the soils information included in the application, the
Cushman-Kutch complex covers most of the proposed disturbed area.
The soils descriptions indicate that both soil types in this
complex have a surface layer that is approximately four inches
thick with a subsoil layer that is approximately 20 inches thick.
In addition the rooting depth for both soils is approximately 20
inches.
The application proposes a stripping and reapplication depth of
only 4 inches, however, based on the subsoil texture and the
rooting depth, it appears that more than four inches of soil would
be available for reclamation purposes. It is the Division's
experience that the greater the amount of insitu topsoil salvaged
and replaced, the better the vegetation establishment on reclaimed
areas. Therefore, the Division is requesting that topsoil be
salvaged and replaced at a depth of 12 inches. Please revise the
text accordingly and amend the bond calculation as necessary to
reflect this change.
