Abstract
At the request of Bowie Resources, Ltd. (as represented by J.E. Stover and
Associates), the Bureau of Land Management, and the Office of Surface Mining, a Class III
cultural resource inventory of approximately 1640 acres of BLM administered lands within
the Iron Point Coal Lease Tract (COC-61209) was conducted by Carl E. Conner and Bazbaza
J. Davenport of Grand River Institute. The study area lies north of the town of Bowie, in
Delta County, Colorado.
The survey was undertaken to ensure the project's compliance federal legislation
governing the identification and protection of cultural resources that will be affected by a
government approved action. The purpose of the cultural resources investigation was to
identify resources within the lease tract, to evaluate these sites' eligibility for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and to make management recommendations for
those sites found to be eligible or potentially eligible.
•
Files seazches were conducted through the BLM and the Office of Archaeology and
Historic Preservation. Two prehistoric sites (SDT700 and SDT868) were found to be
previously recorded. Field work was performed on the 7d', 8d', l Od', I Sd', and 22nd of August
2000. As directed by the new 36 CFR800 regulations, this inventory included the seazch for
relevant traditional cultural properties. Based on the files search, field survey, and this •
researchers personal knowledge, no such communities exist within the project azea.
This inventory was limited to the survey of open terrain provided by existing roads,
trails, and erosional azeas because of the heavy vegetation cover and steep slopes. Open
azeas on the main ridge and benches above the flowing streams were located and inspected as
well.
Sites SDT700 and SDT868 were revisited. The former, which had been classified as a
rockshelter suspected of containing cultural deposits, was determined to be a non-site.
Prehistoric campsite SDT868 was found to be larger than previously recorded and field
evaluated as need data. The field inspection ofthe remaining lease area identified and newly
recorded three prehistoric sites (SDT1282, SDT1283, and SDT1285), one historic site
(SDT1284), and three isolated fords (SDT1286, SDT1287, and SDTI288). Based on the
natural fill within and azound the newly recorded sites, all were field evaluated as need data
and potentially eligible for listing on the NRHP. The historic site and the isolated finds were
evaluated as not eligible. Determinations of effect of the mining operation on the sites must
be made by the controlling federal agency. Prehistoric sites SDT868, SDT1282, SDT1283,
and SDT1285 were field evaluated as need data and testing is recommended.
A assessment of the paleontological resources was also made. No significant such
resources were identified.
.. •
