A small
ski area operated near Stoner from the 1950s and the 1980s, various camps and other
tourism-related operations were established (including Line Camp itself), and more and
more summer or second homes have been built in the area, displacing more and more
agricultural activities. The valley has also become an important source of gravel and
sand for Montezuma and Dolores Counties.
Other than the two items discussed above, there are no structures of historic
significance on the site which will be affected by mining. Fencing, the highway, and related
utilities are not identified as having historical significance.
Historic Themes germane to this site include:
Southwestern Mountains:
The Gold Rush and Territorial Period (1859-1876)
Later Mining Period (1876-1940)
Post WWII Mining Period (1940-Present)
Ranching since 1880
Engineering Context:
Transportation
Irrigation
Four States Aggregates, LLC 30 DEC 2000
Application for Permit: Line Camp Pit FSA-LCP-D1-001
