UPDATED NATURAL RESOURCES INVENTORY FOR
SOUTH OF DIVIDE STUDY AREA
• 3.3 Stock Ponds, Seeps, and Springs

Stock ponds were included in the inventory as long as they could still hold water on at least a
seasonal basis. It was not necessary to observe water in a stock pond for it to be included in the
inventory. Stock ponds were readily identifiable in the July 2004 aerial photographs since they
had water in them at the time the photographs were taken. Stock ponds were not included in the
inventory if the dam for the pond was breeched so that it could no longer retain water. The limit
of the "ordinary high water mark" was used as the limit of jurisdiction for stock ponds.
Seeps were defined as areas where groundwater saturates the soil to the ground surface, but there
is no continuous surface flow. Seeps have saturated soils within the root zone, but not flowing
water.
Springs were defined as areas where groundwater is at the surface, for at least a portion of the
year, and there is observable surface flow, Many of the springs in the study azea have been
developed and aze used for filling of stock ponds.
4.0 STUDY RESULTS
Drawing 1 shows the results of the updated inventory. These drawings also indicate wetlands,
springs, and seeps that would be considered isolated as per the January 2001 U.S. Supreme Court
decision.
Table 3 summarizes the wetlands, stock ponds, seeps, and springs found in the updated inventory
compared to the previous work. Direct comparisons with the previous work aze complicated by
the use of different GPSs and base mapping for the efforts. In 1997, GPS data were downloaded
onto U.S. Geological Survey topographic mapping. An ortho-rectified, digital area photograph
was used as the base map for this update. Two different types of GPS with different accuracies
were used for the two efforts.
831-032.690 Wright Water Engineers, Inc. Page 8
March 2006
