'; ,' • ~ III III III IIIIIII III
Ayers Pit
't'his pit is a knoll or hill which is gravel from top to bottom.
It runs from 1 ft. to 2$ ft. deep.
To mine this pit we use a dozer, front end loader, and a dragline.
We put the material over a portable screen, sometimes we crush the
material. This is a dry operation.
The mined area which is a very slight hollow, collects rain
and seep water from surrounding shale which makes a shallow pond
from 1 to 3 ft. deep. Water grass, cat tails and trees grow
voluntary. This makes a very good refuge for water fowl or small
game. Also a watering hole for all wild life in the area.
All grading and sloping of mine is done in the same operation
of mining gravel.
