Charles Ponchak
Pioneer Uravan
Po sox 2065
Grand Junction, Colorado 81501
Dear Mr, Fonchak:
__ This will constitute the Soil Conservation Service soils and
vegetative report for a ne~•+ mine site e:est of the Carnation
I~;ine in Gypsum Valley.
I am enclosing a copy of the general soils map of the Dolores
River Easin that v+as prepared by the SCS, I believe I gave
you a copy of the soils map for use in your original pez•mit
request for the Carnation and Geo 1-,fines, This copy is provided
in case you have misplaced the other, or submitted it with
your first permit request, kppa.rently it has been pretty well
recieved by the State ];fine Reclamation Board.
I~Iy field visit to the property today confirmed that the site
falls into rnapping unit ~r'3 as shoe+n on the Dolores River Easin
report. The soil unit is comprised of fairly steep terrace
breaks above alluvial fans as described in mapping unit ~3,
The slopes are about 25 to 30% except for the flatter terrace
area. T}~ere is over 35%a Pock and rock fragments scattered
throughout the soil and on the surface v+hich will make it
difficult to stockpile any topsoil for reclamation purposes.
I completed a vegetative inventory on an area which r+as staked
as being a "portal entrance" to determine e+h at the potential
native vegetation might be. The existing vegetation, % ground
cover and est;mat>ed production is shown on the attac}~ed form
CO--RkI•:GE-6.
The area is a complex of Rockland and Pinyon-Juniper l"ioodland
la.,id types. Pock outcrops and those rocks scattered about make
un mound 35% of the surface area, The Pinyon and Juniper
canopy is about 30%, Total annual production could be a.s high
as 150 pounds per acre.
Since a commercial source of seed for the native plants listed
is eithc-r non-existant or extremely ev.pensive you may wish to
consider the follolving mixture and seeding ra.~e per acre of
each species for revegetation: Noz-dan crested wheatgrass -
3 lbs; yellow sweetclover - 2 lbs; and either 7 lbs of Jose
tall erheatgrass or 4 lbs of Paloma Indian ricegrass, You may
wish to scatter three or four pounds each of mountain mahogany
and four-wing saltbush to break up the outline.
