STATE OF COLORADO
Bilf Owens, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
Bruce McCloskey, Acting Director
6060 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 80216
Telephone: (303)297-1192
Nonhwest Regional Service Center
711 Independent Avenue
Grand Iunction, CO 81505
970-255-6100
FAX: 970-255-6111
February 11, 2004
RE: Moffat Limestone Gravel Pit Mule Deer Recommendations
For ~ldlife-
ForPeople
This letter is in response to your request, pursuant to Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
direction, for mule deer seed mix recommendations for the Moffat Limestone gravel pit proposed
southeast of Maybell in T6N, R95 W, Section 4. The proposed pit location falls within Division of
Wildlife (CDOW) designated winter range and severe winter range for mule deer. These definitions
imply that the azea receives significant mule deer use in normal winters as well as during the worst two
often winters. The area is also within an identified mule deer concentration azea, defined as a wintering
azea where mule deer density exceeds twice that of other azeas. In short, the Maybell pit location is in a
vicinity of great importance to mule deer during a variety of winter conditions.
The proposed pit is located on a bench east of Deception Creek. Soil chazacter differs east and west of
Deception Creek. Soils west of the creek consist primarily of sands and feature shrub cover dominated
by antelope bitterbrush. Bitterbrush is highly palatable to deer. Soils east of the creek aze less sandy and
consequently less suited for bitterbrush dominance, though it does occur. Current shrub cover east of
Deception Creek consists primazily of Wyoming big sagebrush with a lesser component of antelope
bitterbrush.
CDOW field staff have reviewed the proposed seed mix you supplied. The basic grass mixture supplied
by the Natural Resources Conservation Service consists of native grasses and appears well adapted to the
site. CDOW recommends the following additions to the seed mix to increase the value of reclaimed
azeas to wintering mule deer:
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Ridc Ensfrom, Chair • Philip James, Vice-Chair • Olive Valdez, Secretary
Members, Bernard Bladc • Tom Burke • Jeffrey Crawford • Brad Phelps • Robert Shoemaker • Ken Torres
Fvltflirin Momharc R~ recall (.anima ant flnn Amanf
