Irrigation u~ct}:odn c.ultc~ble for th7.s roil arc burdarr., xlth c:hcrrt ]en~;the
of run and nprSnYlcra.
The potential native vegetation on this roil is dominated by Indian rlce-
grass, xestcrn xhcatgrass, needle and thread, blue grams, xintcrfat, and four-
xing caltbush. When the range deteriorates, the proportion of Indian rice-
grass, needle and thread, and xcstern wheatgrass decreases, and the art~ount
of blue gr:.~^, s:~uirteltail, t}sce-axn, snaY,cxecd, and rabbittrrush increases.
Undesirable ti:eeds and annual plants invade and become more abundant as range
condition beco:~es poorer.
Seeding is gent-rally not advisable because of the low rainfall. Any seedings
attempted should be limited to the more favorable areas. Adapted species
Snclude IZordan crested xheatgrass, Siberian wheatgrass,Iub~scent xheatgrass,
western f;heatprass, and Russian xildrye. Seeding xork should be done on the
contour to minLnize runoff and soil loss before the grass plants become estab-
lashed. Seeding in conjunction xith pitting is also advisable. Iate surer
seedings have proven most successful. Deferred grazing, cross fencing, and
stock water developments x111 help to prevent range deterioration and promote
the groxth of more desirable plant species.
This soil is not too productive for xildlife xhen used as range because of
lox vegetative production. On~G~irrigated land they are best used for open-
land and rarpeland xildlife such as jacia•abbit, cottontail, and coyotes.
S.'hen xildlife use on these sparsel}~ vegetated soils is contemplated, grope=
livestock grazing management is necessary. Under irrigation, crop residues
from oats and barley may be utilized by ring-necked pheasant, xaterfoxl and
geese.
