• Woody species in the following proportions were added to the portal slopes (these are <br />in addition to the pounds per acre shown under Table 4.4-3b: <br />Species PLS/Acre <br />Choke Cherry 2.6 <br />Mountain Mahogany 2.4 <br />Big Sage 2.4 <br />Rabbit Brush 2.8 <br />The woody species were seeded heavy because some loss through rodents and birds <br />can be expected. <br />4.4:2.6 Irrigation & Weed Control <br />The portion of the reclaimed area that is to be irrigated is shown on the Future Land <br />Use Map (Figure 4.7-2). This crop land will be flood irrigated with water from the <br />Vulcan Ditch. During the first growing season in 1995 the area did not need irrigated <br />because of an unusually wet spring. <br />Infestations of noxious weeds on portions of the disturbed area require treatment to <br />prevent further spreading. Species which are targeted for treatment are Russian <br />• Knapweed, and Thistle. Species of concern include those listed on Garfield County's <br />noxious weed list which include Russian Knapweed, Yellow Starthistle, Plumeless <br />Thistle, Houndstongue, Common Burdock, Scotch Thistle, Canada Thistle, Spotted <br />Knapweed, Diffuse Knapweed, Dalmatian Toadflax, Yellow Toadflax and Hoary Cress. <br />Weed management will be accomplished in accordance with the Colorado Weed <br />Management Act [CRR35-5.5-115] and the Garfield County Vegetation Management <br />Department directives. <br />Weed control will be accomplished by cutting and/or by spot spraying with an industrial <br />herbicide. Spraying will be done by use of a backpack or portable spray system. Ban- <br />vel and Curtail are water soluble industrial herbicides appropriate to control all types of <br />thistle Russian Knapweed and Thistle. <br /> <br />Banvel and/or Curtail will be applied at the rate of three quarts per treated acre, <br />approximately 2.2 oz/gallon. It will not be applied when spray particles may be carried <br />by air currents to areas where desirable plants are growing. All specimen label <br />recommendations will be followed. <br />4.4.2.7 Protection of Newly Seeded Areas <br />Domestic livestock grazing will not be allowed until one year after seeding and will be <br />managed to promote the postmining land use.
