JOHNSON CLASS II GRAVEL PIT FOR WESTSIDE GRAVEL
PAGE 2
March 15th. Any necessary activities that can be performed on a time schedule during the winter period should
be conducted between 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Workers should use caution while driving on the roads in the area
to minimize wildlife-vehicle collisions. Firearms and workers' dogs should be prohibited on the location site at
all times and efforts should be made to limit the number of vehicles visiting the site.
Second, noxious weed maintenance and control should be conducted to minimize the invasion of noxious weeds
during all phases of the gravel pit operation. This should include: the development of a management plan to
maintain the site during the construction of the gravel pit; during the operation of the gravel pit; and restoring the
pit site back to its natural state once the operation is completed. During the restoration process, the CDOW
recommends reseeding any and all disturbed parts of the well site with a mixture of native grasses, fortis and
shrubs. If the applicant or his agent have any questions on the vegetation mixture type for this area, they can
contact the CDOW's habitat biologist for the San Juan Basin, Chris Kloster, for information and recommendations.
The applicant should also take care to make sure that any seeds or parts of noxious weeds are not brought into
the area with any of the construction or mining equipment or on the workers' trucks. The CDOW also
recommends minimizing the construction of any new roads into the area and closing and reclaiming all roads as
part of the reclaiming process once the operation is finished in its entirety
Finally, proper and proactive measures need to be considered to help reduce and prevent possible bear-human
conflicts in this area. Trash should be placed into bear-proof trash containers and not put out for trash
collection until the day of pick-up -not the night before! Also, all possible bear food enticements should be
cleaned up, properly stored away in storage sheds or bear-proof containers. During years when natural food
sources are not available for bear due to late spring frosts and drought conditions, bears will move long distances
in search of food and this move could and will include areas outside of Durango.
If you, your agency or the applicant have any questions or concerns, please contact Kloster or myself at the
Durango Area Office at (970) 247-0855. The CDOW appreciated commenting on this project and would offer to
comment on any project that may involve and/or impact wildlife and its habitat.
Sincerely,
Melody Miller
District Wildlife Manager
Cc: Rick Shaw- Westside Gravel
File
