• 2.04.9 Soil Resource Information
The soils found in the permit area are delineated on the Soils Map (Map 3). Soils work has
been completed by the USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS) for the permit area at the
order 2 level.
The soils are used almost entirely for limited livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The
majority of the vegetation is grassland. Pinon pine and juniper are found in the western part
of the permit area.
Following the SCS order 2 survey for the mine plan area, Colorado Coal Mining Company
subsequently conducted a detailed site specific soil survey during January and February 1980.
The purpose of this program was to develop additional information to conSrm and
complement the SCS mapping. The SCS survey was reviewed for field precision within the
mine plan area. A series of soil cores (sampling locations shown on Map 3) were drilled
through the topsoil and subsoil into the bedrock material. The soil cores were visually
logged in the field. Topsoil and subsoil samples were saved and brought to the laboratory
for chemical and physical analysis. The holes sampled in 1980 were used also to determine
soil and subsoil thickness.
As suggested by representatives of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, the
accepted methods of soil analysis (set forth in the Wyoming Guideline #1) were employed
• for all soil analysis. Also, as suggested by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division,
the soil samples were tested for pH, electrical conductivity, saturation percentage, particle
size analysis, texture, soluble calcium, magnesium, sodium, sodium absorption ratio and
organic matter. As shown on the Soils Map (Map 3), nine soil mapping units are found
within the permit boundary. These mapping units are as follows:
(Cl) Noden Loam
(FcD) Fort Collins Loam
(2C) Otero Fine Sandy Loam
(PP) Olney-Progresso Sandy Loam
(8T) Travessilla -Kim Loam
(LT) Louviers-Travessilla -Rock Outcrop Complex
(LTE) Louviers -Travessilla Complex
(21F) Olney Sandy Loam
(Ba) Baca Loam
As suggested by representatives of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, a
method of chemical soils analysis for CCM#1 would follow the State of Wyoming,
Department of Land Quality Guideline No. 1 for all soils analysis.
•
2.0460
