2-21
• 2.1.7 Existing U/G Mines
Historically, there have been small coal mining operations in the Douglas Pass area as can
be ascertained from opened coal seam outcrops, derelict mining structures, and small refuse
sites. Two mines of this type are located in the vicinity of McClane Canyon. The Bert Long Mine
is located just west of Highway 139 in the canyon opposite from McClane; specifically, SWl/4,
NE1/4, Section 20. This small mine was in operation during 1933 and 1934 and produced
approximately 384 tons of coal ftom a four foot thick portion of the Palisade Seam. The mine
is outside of the permit boundary and will not effect or be effected by the McClane Canyon
Mine.
The other mine was the Monger Mine located in the drainage of Munger Creek primarily in
the SWl/4, SE1/4, Section 22 on Fee land. According to records at the Colorado Division of
• Mines, mining occurred sporadically between 1933 and 1447 with a total production of 5,325
tons from the Carbonera Seam. The mine extended approximately 800 feet from outcrop
towards the southeast. This mine is not in an area that will be mined by Grand Valley during the
next two permit terms. There should be no problems wrth this mine e'dher.
CJ
M~ Volume 1 4-29-96
