::.
- EXHIBIT D VEGETATION AND SOILS
~~
C 17E Whitecross-Rock outcrop complex, 15 to 45 percent slopes
This map unit is a complex of a shallow well drained soil and Rock
outcrop on alpine valley floors, mountain sideslopes and ridges. Elevation
is 11,500 to 13,500 feet. The average annual precipitation ranges from 35
to 45 inches, the average annual air temperature is 28 to 34 degrees F., and
the frost-free period is less than 40 days.
This map unit is 65 percent Gihitecross extremely stony loam and 20
percent Rock outcrop. Included in this unit is about 10 percent Henson very
gravelly loam. Also included are small areas of Rubble land, Redfeather stony
loam, and Eyre extremely stony loam. The components of this unit are so intri-
cately intermingled that it was not practical to map them separately at the
scale used.
C The Fihitecross soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum
derived dominately from rhyolite, tuff and similar volcanic rocks.
Typically, the surface layer of the Whitecross soil is dark reddish
brown extremely stony loam about 2 inches thick. The lower part of the sur-
face is pinkish gray very stony sandy loam about 4 inches thick. The subsoil
is yellowish red extremely stony sandy loam to a depth of 18 inches. Bedrock
is at a depth of 18 inches.
Permeability of the blhitecross soil is moderately rapid. Available
water capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 7 to 20 inches.
Runoff is medium and the hazard of water erosion is moderate. Content of
rock fragments is 35 to 80 percent.
Rock outcrop consists of exposures of rhyolite, tuff and similar
volcanic rocks as cliffs, breaks and escarpments.
This unit is used for sheep grazing, recreation, scenic attraction,
and wildlife habitat.
