The permit limitations were exceeded only once and that was for zinc in
the No. 5 Mine discharge. In addition, cyanide, silver, and thallium have
not been detected in either discharge, and cadmium and copper have not
been detected in the No. 5 Mine discharge since the NPDES monitoring
began. Also the maximum suspended solids concentration was 36 mg/L, which
was measured in the No. 5 Mine discharge.
/ The water quality of the "E" Seam is very similar to that in the "F"
/ Seam. An analysis of "E" Seam water is presented on Table III-lOg. The
/ sample was collected from a monitoring well completed in an underground
/ core hole in the No. 5 Mine.
3.4.5.4 Water Quality of the Alluvium

The water quality of the alluvium in the Yampa and Williams fork
alluvial valleys is of generally poor quality. It is unsuitable for
drinking water and is locally unsuitable for agricultural purposes. There
is high variability in the water quality between wells of the same
alluvium. The water quality of the alluvium may be related to the
lithology of the underlying bedrock and/or it may be related to the
effects of irrigation. The water quality of the alluvium does not appear
to be related to the water quality of the surface water.
Williams Fork Alluvium - Ground water samples have been collected
from 6 wells completed in the Williams Fork alluvium. These wells are
numbered AVF-1 through AVF-6. Samples have been obtained approximately
quarterly beginning in June, 1981. A statistical summary of the ground
(REV. 2/14/86)
III-64
