A
total of 24,424 acres contains federally owned coal and
or surface. The remaining 7,576 acres is either
private or state owned. This private and state ground
has been excluded from the FCEL area, and is shown
shaded on Map 1 of the NOI. No exploration activities
are proposed on any of this private or state owned
acreage.
2) Aspen communities do occur within the proposed Federal
Coal Exploration License boundary area. The location
of drill hole FED-5 is within aspen. If necessary, this
hole may be relocated approximately 500' north or south
to avoid disturbance of the aspen. Drill site FED-45
is located adjacent to aspen and also may be slightly
relocated to minimize disturbance. The remainder of
the holes are located outside of primary aspen
communities. In summary, aspen communities will be
avoided whenever possible and very minimal impact to
any aspen communities is anticipated.
3) Salvaging of topsoil will be conducted within all areas
to be excavated for mudpits as well as the area
immediately surrounding the drillhole in the event of
mid-winter drilling.
4) No response required.
5) During the completion of any water monitoring wells in
which it is necessary to place bentonite below the
screened interval of the well, the bentonite will be
placed with a tremmie pipe or drill steel prior to
emplacement of the well screen.
