• of the permit area.
The old Engleville Mine, as most others in [he Raton Basin, had no water problems'
and, during pit excavation, only dry mine tunnels were encountered. Although the
Vermejo does contain water, its aquifer properties are less than ideal. The specific
yield values for the Vermejo and the Trinidad Sandstone are less than ]0%, and the
porosities range from 15% to 25%. Permeabilities of the Vermejo in this area are
probably 100 -500 millidarcies although the mine workings provide much higher
secondary permeabilities. Historically, well water use has generally been limited to
livestock due to high levels of dissolved salts.
The Monitoring Hole 29-4 is important to demonstrate the ground water quality in the
Vermejo immediately upstream (south) of the pit excavation. The USGS well is
important to demonstrate the quality immediately downstream (north) of the pit
excavation.
Three important well parameters have been graphed for the two welts mentioned above
and the Montoya dug well, since it is also currently monitored on a quarterly basis.
These parameters are 1) water levels, 2) specific conductance and 3) pH.
Rimrock Mine
Groundwater Wel' Levels
0
-20
0
m
a -ao

LL -60
C
L
a
p -80
-100
6188 8188 10!8812!88 3189 5189 9193 12193 1194 4/94
Well 29-4 Montoya Well m° USGS Well
Well [
t 2isa
>a~. <_ .~r ,~~
All samples 5/89 and earlier are before mine startup
7194 12/94
' from communication with Mr. Haske, previously with Colorado Division of Mines.
•
2 07(1) Page I 0
1/12/95
'i h 3
